Christopher Latham G.R.S.M., L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., M.I.M.T.

Christopher Latham passed away peacefully on January 27th 2022 in Joondalup, Western Australia after a short illness. He was 86 and still teaching until just before Christmas 2021.

Christopher was born in Worcester, England in 1935. After National Service with the RAF, Christopher studied clarinet, violin, and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He taught music in England, at Bedales, Frensham Heights and Sidcot School before moving to Australia in 1978 to become Director of Music at Scotch College, Melbourne. He was Deputy Chairman of the V.I.S.E Music Committee. Since 1980 he was an Examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and was also a member of the State Committees of Victoria and Western Australia. He moved to Perth in 1987 to become Director of Music at St. Hilda's in WA.

He retired from full-time teaching in 1998 but still enjoyed his connections with several Eisteddfods and Music Festivals, especially Bunbury, Joondalup (where he lived) and the Catholic Arts Festival and continued his examining and adjudicating commitments. He said he must have looked up ‘retirement’ in the wrong dictionary.

He is greatly missed, although his legacy will surely live on in all those who had the benefit of his music teaching and keen sense of humour.

Christopher’s final farewell and committal will be held at 3.30 p.m. WA time on Friday 25 February at  Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park (mcb.wa.gov.au) which is just down the freeway from Ocean Reef where he lived. The proceedings will be livestreamed so that it is available to those not in Perth, and we anticipate a link being available for 30 days thereafter for those who are not able to watch at the time.
