Leave a Legacy
Leave your Legacy
Legacy gifts have always played an important part at Sidcot. These are deeply personal donations and have provided bursaries, restored historic buildings, and funded sports, caving and other educational activities. A gift to Sidcot in your will plays a significant role in shaping our School and to recognise your generosity, you’ll be invited to join the 1699 Society.
Whether you have decided to leave a gift in your will or would like more information about legacy giving, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sarah Simms by email at development@sidcot.org.uk or call +44 (0)1934 845238.
Q&A
There are several ways that you can include a gift to Sidcot in your will. Your legacy may be in the form of money or financial assets, such as shares or property. Many people choose to give a residual gift because it maintains its value with inflation.
We understand that family and loved ones come first but leaving a gift in your will to a charity may reduce the inheritance tax due on your estate with little impact to your family. Sidcot School is a registered charity, therefore legacy gifts are exempt from Inheritance Tax.
It is important to consult your legal adviser before drafting a new will, updating an existing one, or making other plans for your estate.
For more information please see our Legacy Guide.
Legacy giving can be highly tax efficient and may be a far more attractive option than paying Inheritance Tax on the value of your gift.
Because of the School's charitable status, all gifts received will be exempt from UK Inheritance Tax. In addition, by remembering Sidcot School in your Will, you may be able to reduce the taxable value of your remaining assets and the amount of Inheritance Tax on your estate. Currently, if you leave 10% or more of the net value of your estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax on the remainder may be reduced by 10%.
Appendix D in our documents here outline some examples of tax savings. We also recommend that your seek independent legal and tax advice.
Most people leave their legacy gifts for ‘the general charitable purposes’ of the School. This means that the donation can be used for the areas of greatest need.
You can also leave a gift for a specific purpose or for a particular fundraising priority or fund. If you would like to leave a specific gift, please let us know so that we can ensure that we are able to accommodate your wishes.

The Sidcot 1699 Society was formed to recognise in their lifetime those members of the Sidcotian community who have included Sidcot School in their Will. It is entirely voluntary and names are not published without permission. Members are invited to special events in School and their name added to our Book of Legacies, kept in the Old Library. To become a member, please let us know that you have left a gift in your will using the pledge form above. You are also very welcome to attend an event, without committal, to find out more about how your gift, no matter the size, can really make a positive difference to the future of your school. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of the 1699 Society and joining us at the next event.

The Sidcot School Legacy Committee is a small committee of senior staff and Governors that oversees the management of legacy gifts on behalf of the Governing Board, ensuring that funds are either used as per the legator's wishes or invested for the optimum benefit of the School at the time of receipt. The use of any 'unrestricted' legacy gift that is left to the School will be determined by the Governors on the advice of the Sidcot School Legacy Committee.
